Mumbai, June 5

Senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said he has tested positive for coronavirus and is in home isolation.

Fadnavis, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, had earlier also contracted the viral infection in October 2020.

On Sunday, the former state chief minister in a tweet said, "I have tested #COVID19 positive and in home isolation.

Taking medication amp; treatment as per the doctor's advice. Those who have come in contact with me are advised to get Covid tests done. Take care everyone!"

Earlier, when Fadnavis contracted the infection in 2020, he had undergone treatment at a government hospital.

Bhubaneswar June 5

A new Cabinet took oath in Odisha on Sunday, a day after all 20 ministers in the state resigned to pave way for a reshuffle in the ministry.

BJD MLAs Jagannath Saraka, Niranjan Pujari and R P Swain were among the 13 MLAs who were administered oath of office and secrecy by Governor Ganeshi Lal at the ceremony held in the New Convention Centre of the Lok Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar.

Three women legislators -- Pramila Mallick, Usha Devi and Tukuni Sahu ndash; have been inducted into the Cabinet.

Sources in the BJD said Saraka, a noted tribal leader, was the first to be sworn in as he is named after Lord Jagannath.

Odisha Assembly Speaker S N Patro had also quit the post on Saturday, but cited no reason for doing so.

Chitrakoot, June 5

A 13-year-old Dalit girl, who was allegedly gang-raped here a few days ago, died to strangulation, her post-mortem report has confirmed.

The police on Sunday said they received the autopsy report late on Saturday. Pahadi police station SHO Ajit Pandey confirmed that the girl had been raped according to the autopsy report.

The girl, resident of a village in Pahadi police station area, was allegedly gang-raped on Wednesday night, when she was sleeping with her family outside her house.

She was rushed to a hospital in Kaushambi district, where she passed away on Thursday.

Three people Nadeem, Adarsh Pandey and Vipul Mishra had already been arrested.

According to police sources, the accused had accompanied the girl's family to the hospital.

They said CCTV footage was being checked.

The cumulative number of Covid vaccine doses administered in the country crossed 194 crore on Saturday, the Union Health Ministry said.

Over10 lakh vaccine doses were administered till 7 pm on Saturday, it said. The daily vaccination tally is expected to increase with the compilation of the final reports for the day by late night. A total of 1,04,295 precaution doses of Covid vaccine were administered to those aged 18-59 years till 7 pm on Saturday, taking the total number of precaution doses given in this age-group to 26,28,276 so far. — PTI

Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram on Saturday moved the Delhi High Court, seeking anticipatory bail in an Enforcement Directorate case in connection with the Chinese visa scam.

Karti's petition challenging the trial court's June 3 order rejecting his anticipatory bail plea is likely to be taken up by the high court on Monday.

The trial court had dismisses the anticipatory bail pleas of Karti and two others on the ground that the alleged offence was of a very serious nature.

It had also vacated an interim protection from arrest granted to the accused during the pendency of the anticipatory bail plea and directed them to join the probe. They were asked to be present as and when called by the investigating officer.

In a first for the Rajasthan High Court, a couple will be serving as its judges. Subha Mehta and Kuldeep Mathur were appointed judges to the HC by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on June 3.

Justice Shubha Mehta's husband Justice Mahendra Goyal is already a judge in the HC. While Justice Mehta is from the judicial service, Justice Goyal was a lawyer. He was appointed in November 2019. In December 2020, Justice Murali Shankar Kuppuraju and his wife Justice Tamilselvi T Valayapalayamand were sworn in as judges of the Madras High Court on the same day. Before that, Justice Vivek Puri and Justice Archana Puri were sworn in as judges of the Punjab High Court on the same day in November 2019.

Security has been heightened in Srirangapatna, the erstwhile capital of 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan in the district, following VHP's call to perform puja at the Jamia mosque, claiming it was built after razing a Hanuman temple.

Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the temple town under Section 144 of the CrPC to prevent any protest or procession from taking place. Besides district police force, contingents of Karnataka State Reserved Police have also been deployed. The roads have been barricaded.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Saturday asked Twitter and YouTube to take down two derogatory men's body perfume ads after a host of netizens slammed these for allegedly promoting sexual assault culture.

"The Iamp;B Ministry has suspended the controversial and outrageous ad of Layer'r Shots deodorant, pending investigation. The ministry has also written to Twitter and YouTube to take the videos down from their platforms at the earliest," government sources said.

Delhi Commission for Women's chief Swati Maliwal tweeted against the ads and slammed its makers for "promoting rape culture". The government move followed a directive by Advertising Standards Council of India, which termed the ads in violation of its code and suspended these pending probes. The ads were telecast by a private TV channel during a recent cricket match.

The Delhi High Court on Saturday allowed the Enforcement Directorate's plea against a special court's order allowing the presence of Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain's lawyers at a distance during his interrogation by the probe agency in money laundering case.

Since there was neither any FIR nor a complaint against Jain, he cannot claim to have the presence of his lawyers during recording of his statement, Justice Yogesh Khanna said.

"Even otherwise, admittedly, his entire recording of statement is video-graphed and audio-graphed which certainly would dispel the apprehension of any coercion, threat to the respondent," he said.

Now, the Enforcement Directorate can interrogate Jain — a senior AAP leader who was arrested on Monday under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) — without the presence of his lawyers.

Hapur, June 4

At least 12 workers were killed and 21 injured when a boiler exploded at a factory in western Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The impact of the explosion was so intense that the roofs of some of the factories located in the vicinity were damaged. It took three hours for the fire tenders to douse the blaze. The factory is located adjacent to a CNG pump. Rescue and relief measures were taken up at the site.
