The Delhi Police today slapped the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against five accused arrested in connection with the April 16 violence in Jahangirpuri. The move came hours after the police submitted its preliminary probe report to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Editorial: Communal provocationOfficials said the report had details of the riots, including the turn of events and steps taken by the police to restore normalcy in the area. Till now, the Delhi Police, which claimed eight rounds were fired during the violence on Saturday, have arrested 23 persons and two juveniles from "both communities" in connection with the case that resulted in injuries to nine persons, including eight cops.
The NSA has been slapped against Ansar, Salim, Imam Sheikh alias Sonu, Dilshad and Ahir, the officials said.
Violence erupted between members of two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in north-west Delhi's Jahangirpuri. As per the FIR registered on the complaint of a police officer, there was a peaceful procession and an argument led to stone-pelting and clashes.
