Modi pens congratulatory letter to new Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif

New Delhi, April 14

Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a congratulatory letter to the new Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday, following up his phone call of April 11 when he had congratulated Sharif on his election.

Sharif also put out a tweet welcoming Sikh delegates visiting Pakistan on the occasion of Baisakhi. "This Punjabi festival symbolises much more than merely the start of the harvesting season. It is a sign of hope, renewal and growth. Congratulations to all those celebrating this spring festival,'' he tweeted.

In his phone call on April 11, PM Modi had said India desires peace and stability in a region free of terror, so that "we can focus on our development challenges and ensure the well-being and prosperity of our people''.

Sharif had responded a day later, thanking PM Modi for congratulating him and assuring him that Islamabad desired "peaceful and cooperative'' ties with India including peaceful settlement of outstanding disputes such as J amp; K.
