New Delhi, June 16
Congress MPs on Thursday met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu alleging breach of their privileges by the Delhi police and demanded action against erring cops.
The delegation of the Lok Sabha MPs was led by House leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Rajya Sabha MPs by Mallikarjun Kharge.
Both delegations said Delhi cops barged into the AICC headquarters yesterday and assaulted leaders, including MPs who have privileges.
The Congress MPs also submitted video evidence of their allegations against the Delhi Police. Kharge said, "We want our memorandum to the Chairman to be treated as a privilege notice. The Chairman can defend our rights and ask the cops how MPs were detained."
Senior MP P Chidambaram said, "What the Delhi Police did is a clear violation of liberty. MPs have privileges and fundamental rights under Article 19 and 21. Every fundamental right and privilege has been violated. We have appealed to the Chairman to take action of breach of privilege as well as breach of liberty and let the process of law take its course. Let the matter be referred to the privileges committee."
Chowdhury alleged the MPs were treated like "terrorists" and the cops "mistreated women MPs of Congress and tore their clothes". "Is this an 'amrit kaal'? The government is turning 'amrit kaal' into vish kaal," Chowdhury said.
