Footage recorded in central Moscow shows Russian security forces dragging away two women, including one who held a sign that read “two words,” among the thousands detained domestically since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The video was recorded by Activatica.org in Moscow’s Manezhnaya Square on March 13. As it begins, a woman is conversing with a man behind the camera, asking if she would be arrested simply for holding the sign. Within seconds, helmeted men carry the woman away. Another woman walks up to the camera and asks if they are willing to speak with people besides those protesting the war. Before she has a chance to speak, the second woman is likewise dragged away by police. Earlier in March, Russia passed new laws that effectively criminalized “independent war reporting and protesting the war,” as Human Rights Watch described the legislation. Thousands of demonstrators have been detained by Russian security forces since the start of the Ukraine invasion on February 24, including others who attempted to test restrictions by holding signs without overt reference to the war, including blank placards.
