The widow of NYPD officer Jason Rivera, who was killed while responding to an emergency call, eulogized her husband during a service at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan on Friday, January 28. Rivera, 22, was shot and killed on January 21 as he responded to a domestic disturbance call in Harlem. Rivera’s partner, 27-year-old Wilbert Mora, also died of his injuries days later. Rivera’s wife, Dominique Luzuriaga, told a crowd of mourners she had known Jason since elementary school. She said the two had gotten into an argument on the day he died, leading her to call an Uber rather than ride home with him. “You asked me if you are sure that you don’t want me to take you home. It might be the last ride I give you,” Luzuriaga said. “I said no, and that was probably the biggest mistake I ever made.” During her eulogy, Luzuriaga also criticized Manhattan Attorney General Alvin Bragg. “Although you won’t be here anymore, I want you to live through me. This system continues to fail us. We are not safe anymore, not even the members of the service. I know you were tired of these laws, especially the ones from the new DA. I hope he’s watching you speak through me right now,” she said to applause. Bragg has been criticized by the police union for recently announcing that his office would no longer prosecute marijuana misdemeanors, public transportation fare evasion, most trespassing charges, resisting arrest, prostitution, and other crimes.
