Protesters gathered outside the city council building in Energodar, Ukraine, on March 20, demonstrating against the Russian invasion and the kidnapping of Energodar’s first deputy mayor, Ivan Samoyduk, and other citizens. Video shared by the mayor of Energodar, Dmitro Orlov, shows him addressing large crowd waving Ukrainian flags. “At least one and a half thousand residents of Enerhodar promptly responded to the call and gathered near the City Council’s building for a peaceful protest in less than an hour,” said Orlov, according to a translation by Pravda. “They came to say ‘no’ to the tyranny of the occupiers and reaffirm the undoubted truth that Enerhodar has always been part of Ukraine and will be forever,” Orlov continued. “The abduction of a man, a citizen, an official, Ivan Samoidiuk, who has been successfully addressing many social problems, is a provocation that threatens the further maintenance of the city,” said Orlov. “If he is not released by tomorrow, these protests will go on indefinitely and round the clock.” Orlov also said following the protest, Russian forces attempted to capture several demonstrators but were deterred by “hundreds of people” who formed a “tight wall” and “literally beat their countrymen from captivity.” “The occupiers began firing in the air and were forced to leave their war-fighting attempts to detain civilians,” said Orlov.
