UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss met with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday, February 10, but a tense press conference afterwards indicated little was achieved to head off tensions around Ukraine. “There is still time for Russia to end its aggression towards Ukraine and pursue the path of diplomacy,” said Truss, referring to Moscow’s unabated military buildup near Ukraine’s borders. Lavrov was dismissive of the UK’s diplomatic effort, describing talks with Truss as “like the mute with the deaf.” Earlier, the longtime Russian diplomat allegedly tripped up Truss by asking her about Russian sovereignty of the Russian regions of Voronezh and Rostov. According to Russian media Truss said the UK would never recognize Russia’s sovereignty over the areas. In a statement, Truss later said she mistook Lavrov’s reference to areas in Ukraine, and said the two regions were part of Russia. At the conclusion of the joint appearance, Lavrov walked off, leaving Truss briefly alone. Credit: @FCDOGovUK via Storyful
