Two fishermen were rescued from their sinking vessel amid five-foot waves by a US Coast Guard helicopter aircrew near Sitka, Alaska, on February 7. Footage distributed by the US Coast Guard 17th District Alaska shows the rescue. A rescue swimmer can be heard saying the fishermen need to get off the boat. A basket is dropped onto the boat by the crew aboard the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, and the fishermen are lifted up one by one. According to a US Coast Guard press release, watch-standers in the Sector Juneau Command Center were first made aware of the vessel in distress around 8 pm. An Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was sent to assist in the rescue operation, which was carried out in near-freezing temperatures with 55 mph wind gusts. Lt Cmdr Scott Woodcock, the helicopter pilot on the rescue, said: “The biggest challenge during this rescue was the severe winds. However, the fishermen were well prepared with good communication equipment and survival gear.” Credit: U.S. Coast Guard 17th District Alaska via Storyful
