Tibetan demonstraters burned a Chinese flag near the Chinese embassy in Delhi, India, on Friday, January 4, in protest against Beijing hosting the Winter Olympics, which officially began later that day. Protesters blocked a road near the Chinese embassy and held signs saying “say no to genocide” and “no Beijing 2022”. They chanted “boycott, boycott, Beijing Olympics”. One clip filmed by journalist Sidhant Sibal shows protesters waving Tibetan and Indian flags while being held by police. He filmed protesters standing on and burning the Chinese flag. India announced on Thursday that it would join the diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics. Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said in a press briefing that it was “regrettable that the Chinese side has chosen to politicize an event like the Olympics”, referring to China’s decision to make an army officer who was involved in a clash with Indian soldiers a torchbearer for the games.
