There are ‘better ways to go’ for a federal integrity commission than ICAC

Former NSW Labor Senator Stephen Loosley says prior experience of New South Wales' ICAC suggests there are better alternatives for a federal corruption and integrity commission. One of the key battlegrounds in the upcoming election campaign will be the introduction of a federal integrity commission, with Labor opting for a NSW ICAC model. "I think our experience of the ICAC in New South Wales, and some of the other bodies interstate - and notice the turmoil in Queensland just at the moment - suggests strongly that there are better ways to go," Mr Loosley told Sky News host Chris Smith. He said "there's no question" public corruption is an issue which has to be addressed "very forcefully". "But why not look at alternatives, such as having a commission for public ethics that is preventative, and a specific unit within the Australian Federal Police that is an anti-corruption-taskforce, rather than relying upon these hearings, these show trials that seem to be so popular in some quarters?"
