Tennessee State Senator Cites Hitler as Inspiration for Homeless People

A Republican state senator in Tennessee used Adolf Hitler as an example of a homeless person turning their life around as he delivered a speech on the senate floor on April 13. Sen Frank Niceley made the remarks as lawmakers were debating HB 0978, a bill that would make “solicitation or camping along a controlled-access highway or entrance or exit ramp” – which had not been a crime – into a misdemeanor. “In 1910, Hitler decided to live on the streets for a while. So for two years, Hitler lived on the streets and practiced his oratory and his body language and how to connect with the masses, and then went on to lead a life that’s got him into history books,” Niceley said. “So, a lot of these people — it’s not a dead end. They can come out of these homeless camps and have a productive life, or in Hitler’s case, a very unproductive life,” he added. Niceley voted in favor of the bill, which passed the Tennessee Senate by 22 votes to 10. Only Republicans voted in its favor. Niceley was criticized by some colleagues in the senate, including Democratic Rep Gloria Johnson, who tweeted: “TN Senator says Hitler made something of himself after being homeless & you can too. I’m going to have to apologize to the universe for this guy.” Credit: Tennessee General Assembly via Storyful
