A wildfire growing near Flagstaff, Arizona, “surged” overnight to more than 16,600 acres and was still zero-percent contained as of Wednesday, April 20, fire officials said. The Tunnel Fire, which began on Sunday about 14 miles northeast of Flagstaff, was exacerbated by strong winds, the US Forest Service said. The windy conditions sent smoke over Arizona roadways, reducing visibility and prompting closures. This footage from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) shows conditions on US Highway 89, which officials said would be “likely be closed” between milepost 423 to 445 “for the next several days.” Smoke was expected to impact the Doney Park, a residential area northeast of Flagstaff and a few miles south of the fire, through Wednesday evening before drifting northeast, the US Forest Service said. The fire also prompted the evacuation on Wednesday of some residents and livestock in Coconino County.
