The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on April 6 that more than 1,000 people who had fled the Ukrainian city of Mariupol had safely reached Zaporizhzhia. An ICRC team had tried repeatedly in recent days to reach besieged Mariupol, coming within 20 km (12.4 miles) of the city but said in a statement that “security conditions on the ground made it impossible to enter.” On Tuesday, Red Cross staff set off from Berdyansk — located southwest of Mariupol along the Sea of Azov — leading a convoy of “buses and private cars” that reached Zaporizhzhia on Wednesday. “This convoy’s arrival to Zaporizhzhia is a huge relief for hundreds of people who have suffered immensely and are now in a safer location. It’s clear, though, that thousands more civilians trapped inside Mariupol need safe passage out and aid to come in,” said Pascal Hundt, ICRC head of delegation in Ukraine.
