Conservative MP for Carleton Pierre Poilievre on February 5 announced a bid for the party leadership after Erin O’Toole was voted out as leader a few days earlier. Poilievre made the announcement in a video on Twitter, in which he took aim at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party. Poilievre, the Conservative’s finance spokesperson, argued that the Liberal Party had fueled inflation, was trampling on free speech, and was using COVID-19 as a “political opportunity” to attack “small business, truckers, and other hard-working Canadians.” “Trudeau thinks he’s your boss. He’s got it backwards. You are the boss. That’s why I’m running for prime minister,” Poilievre said in the video. In recent days, Poilievre had used social media to mount strong defenses of ongoing protests over vaccine mandates led by convoys of truckers. The demonstrations first centered around parliament in Ottawa, but later spread to other towns and cities nationwide. In one Twitter video that Poilievre posted January 29, he delivers a speech on a bridge outside Ottawa while trucks pass underneath to join the demonstrations. The video garnered more than 5,000 retweets and 17,000 likes. In his announcement, Poilievre said his leadership would bring: “Freedom from the invisible thief of inflation; freedom to raise with your values; freedom to make your own health and vaccine choices; and freedom to worship God, in your own way.” “Our destination is where the government is servant, not master,” he said.
