President Biden delivered a speech about infrastructure in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Friday, January 28, hours after a bridge collapsed in the area early Friday morning. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Twitter that the President was informed of the collapse before his scheduled speech and visited the scene of the collapse. At least 10 people were hurt in the incident. Three of the injured were taken to a hospital, but none had life-threatening injuries, Pittsburgh Fire Chief Darryl Jones said. Addressing the collapse, Biden said it was “simply unacceptable” and spoke about the $1.2 trillion infrastructure deal passed by Congress last year to upgrade the nation’s roads, bridges, pipes, ports, broadband, and other public works. “What we saw today, when a bridge is in disrepair, it can literally threaten lives,” he said. Biden pledged to repair the bridge, along with thousands more across the country, saying it was in the interest of public safety and to generate commerce.
