Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said during a press briefing on February 2 that additional forces were being sent to Romania, Poland, and Germany due to Russian military activity near Ukraine, but stressed that they were not “permanent moves.” Kirby said, “The current situation demands that we reinforce the deterrent and defensive posture on NATO’s eastern flank.” Kirby said the additional troops were “not going to fight in Ukraine” but would “ensure the robust defense of our NATO allies.” He did not say how long the Pentagon expected the additional troops to be in place. Kirby said 1,000 soldiers stationed in Germany – members of a mounted cavalry unit which he said was “designed to move quickly once in place” – would join 900 troops already in Romania. Another 2,000 troops would be moved from the United States to Germany and Poland, he said. He said the moves were in response to “current situations,” adding: “We will adjust our posture as those conditions evolve.” Kirby said the extra forces were “separate and in addition to the 8,500 personnel in the United States on heightened-alert posture” that the Pentagon announced the previous week.
