Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny was reunited with his wife, Yulia Navalnaya, as he appeared in a prison court in Pokrov, Russia, on February 15, fighting charges which could extend his prison term by more than 10 years, Radio Free Europe said. Footage recorded from a press monitor by RFE shows Navalny speaking inside the prison court while standing between his lawyers, Olga Mikhailova and Vadim Kobzev. Yulia Navalnaya had demanded access to the proceedings prior to the beginning of the trail and can be seen inside the court. Navalny is facing embezzlement charges, RFE said. Amnesty International criticized the closed-door trial. Marie Struthers, Amnesty’s director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, said: “This sham trial, attended by prison guards rather than the media, breaks international human rights law and clearly deprives Navalny of his right to a fair trial.” Navalny began his current two-and-a-half-year sentence in February 2021.
