A series of crashes on an ice-covered Interstate 10 on Thursday, February 3, left thousands of motorists stranded overnight near Kerrville, Texas, for multiple hours into Friday morning. The City of Kerrville Police Department warned Thursday morning that all local roads were “iced up” and said conditions would get worse through the day. They advised people to stay home if they didn’t need to travel. By 8 pm Thursday evening, conditions were “rapidly getting worse,” police said, adding that they were “dealing with multiple jackknifed and stuck 18 wheelers” on Interstate 10. “The interstate is not drivable and should be avoided. Traffic is at a standstill in both directions,” police said. This footage from Kerrville resident Kurt Schlunegger was posted on Facebook at 10.05 pm and shows a long line of vehicles. Schlunegger estimated the number of stranded motorists to be in the thousands and said he felt “blessed” to have made it home that night. “Pray for them. Traffic only moved one mile in one hour,” he wrote. At 7 am Friday morning, Kerrville police and the Texas Department of Transportation said westbound traffic on I-10 remained at a standstill. The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) said roads in the area were “still glazed” and that streets in Kerrville were in worse shape than they were on Thursday. The sheriff’s office again urged drivers to avoid I-10, telling them that “adding your vehicle to the line of stopped traffic would be counterproductive for everyone.” Just after 11 am, Kerrville police said traffic had started “moving very slowly” on I-10 in both directions. “There are still some stalled/stuck 18 wheelers here and there, which is causing traffic to be restricted to one lane in many areas. We are working tirelessly, as we have throughout the night, to get traffic safely moving again,” police said. Credit: Kurt Schlunegger via Storyful
