The Victorian Electoral Commission's legal letter to NBA star Andrew Bogut has been slammed as an "egregious overreach" and a threat to free speech. It comes after Australian former basketball player Andrew Bogut recently attracted the ire of Victoria’s electoral watchdog after posting a video on social media heavily criticising the state’s controversial pandemic powers bill. Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton said the saga was one of the worst examples over overreach by a government body. “Keegan Bartlett from the Victorian Electorate Commission didn’t like that video because Andrew’s tweet wasn’t what they describe as being authorised,” Mr Houghton said. “He cannot publish his opinion, supposedly if that opinion can influence an election, unless he includes his name and address on the publication. “This is disturbing stuff,” Mr Houghton said. “We asked the electoral commission’s Senior Media and Communication Advisor Ruth Murphy how they could possibly justify sending such an aggressively worded letter, and she refused to answer three simple, yet crucial questions. “You deserve to know answers to those questions, and Ruth is paid to provide those answers to the public and to the media by extension.”
