Border authorities said 1.27 million Ukrainians had fled to Poland by March 7 as Russian military forces continued their full-scale invasion. An interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) captured the raw emotions of a woman as she traveled toward the Polish border with her son, fleeing Russian airstrikes in their home city of Kharkiv. “My son and I are headed for the Polish border. I had to leave my home, my work, and my parents in order to save my child,” Yulia Sukhovyeyeva told RFE. She urged for the closure of the airspace over Ukraine to prevent further shelling, recounting her own experience shielding her son with her body. “Please, make a no-fly zone over Kharkiv because our children are dying there … Please stop this war if you can,” Sukhovyeyeva said. The mother shared that her son, Mykyta, was traumatized by their recent experiences, and is startled by “any noise now.” “I don’t know how he will recover from this psychological trauma,” she said. Sukhovyeyeva told RFE that she planned to take Mykyta to family abroad in Estonia before returning to Kharkiv, where her parents remain. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Storyful
