President Joe Biden said on Tuesday, March 8, that the US will ban Russian energy imports in a move to “hold the country accountable” for its full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. The measures came as the White House “continue[d] to hold Russia accountable for its unprovoked and unjustified war on Ukraine,” with the imposition of a new round of sanctions, it said on Tuesday. The move would be a “powerful blow” against “the main artery of Russia’s economy” and has bipartisan support, the president said. “When I first spoke to this I said defending freedom is going to cost,” Biden said. “It’s going to cost us as well.” Biden addressed rising gas costs across the country, blaming the price hikes on “Putin’s war.” “Putin’s war is already hurting American families at the gas pump,” the president said. “I’m going to do everything I can to minimize Putin’s price hike here at home.” Biden said, “Ukraine will never be a victory for Putin. Putin may be able to take a city, but he’ll never be able to hold the country.” Credit: The White House via Storyful
