‘He has a socialism of the heart’: Billy Bragg lauds ‘old mate Albo’ as right man for PM
British singer-songwriter and activist Billy Bragg has lauded his "old mate" Anthony Albanese after the Prime Minister quoted one of his song lyrics in his first press conference in the top job. Mr Albanese quoted the socialist singer's song 'To Have and To Have Not' when announcing his first ministry on Tuesday. He was giving grounds for the inclusion of recent newcomer Kristy McBain, who retained for Labor the important NSW seat of Eden-Monaro at a by-election in 2020. "A Billy Bragg song – 'just because you’re going forward doesn’t mean I’m going backwards'," Mr Albanese said. The Prime Minister's quote was in reference to Ms McBain seemingly leapfrogging other candidates to a cabinet portfolio. She is the Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories. Bragg took to social media to say he was "not surprised" his friend quoted one of his songs in his first media conference as Prime Minister. "I know Albo is the right person for the job. He has a socialism of the heart," Bragg tweeted on Wednesday morning.
