Education Minister Jason Clare says the first priority is to get legislation through the parliament to implement “big reforms” in childcare to make it cheaper for parents. “The second is how do we stop the slide? How do we turn around that slide that we’ve seen in student results that primary schools and high schools were sliding down that sort of global benchmark,” Mr Clare told Sky News Australia. “I want to work with state education ministers and teachers, all of the professionals in this area, see what we can do to turn that around, and part of that is getting more high achievers at high school to go to university and become teachers. “And then the work that we do with our universities. They got hammered by COVID, they didn’t get JobKeeper, but they also lost a lot of international students, they represent one of the biggest export markets that we’ve got, but they’re also the place where we build those skills. “Making sure that we’re setting ourselves up for the future means that our universities are skilling up Aussies for those jobs. So that’s really important as well.”
