Shadow Immigration Minister Kristina Keneally says Australia should “stand up clearly for its national interests”. It comes after Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Paul Murray Live on Wednesday, “in national security, there are really only two courses you can go down; you can appease, or you can stand up for what you believe them”. Ms Keneally responded to Mr Morrison’s suggestion Labor could possibly “appease” China. “We should speak up in our national interest on matters like economic coercion, the South China Sea, and human rights,” Ms Keneally told Sky News Australia. “That is the approach that Labor has taken in government and will take in government again. “We strive to seek bipartisanship. “So, my message to Mr Morrison is this, focus on the national interest, not trying to manufacture differences with the opposition in the lead up to an election. “He should not be using foreign policy to play domestic politics in a lead up to an election; that is not in the national interest.”
