The federal election has officially kicked off with Labor currently in the lead, according to the latest Newspoll released just after the 2022 Budget. The election will be held on May 21, Sky News Australia has confirmed. Sky News Chief Election Analyst Tom Connell takes you through the state of play. As it stands, the House of Representatives has the Coalition in control of 76 seats and Labor with 69, and the LNP trailing behind in the Newspoll 46 per cent to 54 per cent two-party-preferred. According to the final Newspoll before the 2019 election, the Coalition led 51.5 per cent to Labor’s 48.5 per cent but recent overhaul of the pollster’s methodology has shown more accurately represented voters and a change in the governmental preference. In the primary vote, the Coalition has slipped five per cent to 36 per cent and Labor is on 38 per cent, with the Greens and other minor parties staying at the same numbers as the 2019 Newspoll. The government’s pre-election campaign hit a series of roadblocks including the late installation of preselected candidates into marginal Labor-held seats, with finalisation only occurring at the beginning of April. There is also increased pressure on the two major parties by independents, notably Clive Palmer’s United Australia party and the ‘Voices of’ independent candidate movement.
