An Egyptian man was hailed a hero by Middle Eastern media for evacuating Arab children from Ukraine following the Russia invasion. Eslam Al Ashery told Storyful he moved to Ukraine to study dentistry two years ago. Al Ashery told Sky News, following the invasion, he travelled to the Polish border with the intention of leaving Ukraine. However, when he arrived at the border he saw “a distress call” from an Iraqi woman on Snapchat saying her house in Bila Tserkav was bombed, and that she and her children were besieged. “I went to the place of the girl and her children and brought them to the Polish border,” he said. He told Storyful, “If I had left Ukraine and saw that post I am certain that I would have felt guilty … that I didn’t get them.” Al Ashery told Storyful he had driven 18 people, including nine children, to the border since the start of the invasion. Speaking with Storyful on March 12, he said he had helped Arabs and Ukrainians reach the border that day. He said he intended to help more people leave the country safely. He said, “I don’t like the idea of leaving now, I feel like I am doing something good … Even if something happens to me, thank God, I would have died with a good reputation, a good respected name, and having done something good in my life.” He quoted the Quran verse, “whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity.” Al Ashery said he filmed this footage between Kyiv and Zhytomyr on February 27, when driving Iraqi children to the Polish border. A dark plume of smoke can be seen rising in the distance. Credit: @eslamashery via Storyful
