A car being boxed in by police rammed two patrol cars and escaped efforts to arrest the driver in Port Orchard, Washington, on January 26. According to a post on the City of Port Orchard Government Facebook page, police were responding to a call about a stolen vehicle when the incident occurred. Police said, “under 2021 Washington state law, possession of a stolen vehicle is not a crime for which police can pursue. [So,] the officers formulated a plan to box the vehicle in to prevent the suspect from fleeing.” The car’s driver was suspected of third-degree assault, hit and run, and possession of a stolen car, according to the Kitsap Sun, which quoted Port Orchard Police Chief Matt Brown “It didn’t quite work out the way we wanted,” Brown was quoted as saying. “He was able to get away, but we know who he is and intend to pick him up at a later time.” This video taken by Jeremy Townsend shows the car being driven into the police vehicles before racing away and striking another parked car outside a thrift store.
