A Bulgarian MEP has denied giving a Nazi salute during a European Parliament debate in Strasburg on February 16. Video shows Angel Dzhambazki gesturing while leaving the chamber during a session held to discuss a recent court ruling to cut funds to countries that breach rule-of-law standards. Dzhambazki said the ruling was “nothing to do with law and the rule of law,” but rather “hate for nation states.” According to Politico, he said the EU was trying to “shame” Hungary and Poland. A delegation of Renew Europe MEPs posted on Twitter that Dzhambazki had given a “scandalous Nazi salute.” Dzhambazki responded by tweeting that it was a “simple wave,” and that “the fact that one disagrees with you does not mean he is a Nazi.” European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said “a fascist salute in the European Parliament is unacceptable to me – always and everywhere,” adding that the gesture is “from the darkest chapter of our history and must be left there.” Metsola told Politoco that she will initiate a sanctions procedure against Dzhambazki.
