Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro inspected damage in the Pernambuco cities of Recife and Jaboatao dos Guararapes on Monday, May 30, from aboard a helicopter after flooding and landslides killed dozens of people over the weekend. Following the flight, Bolsonaro held a press conference in Recife in which he said more than 400 military personnel were being deployed to assist Civil Defense and local security agencies, and that funds earmarked for emergencies and natural disasters had been made available to at least 14 cities affected by the rains, according to a press release from the Brazilian government. According to G1, the amount of rain that fell on Jaboatao dos Guararapes between Friday and Monday exceeded the average rainfall for the entire month of May. On Tuesday, provincial news outlet Diario de Pernambuco reported that at least 106 people were confirmed to have died in landslides and flooding between May 25 and 31.
