South Korea’s electronic parts maker LG Innotek unveiled an in-cabin radar module Tuesday, which it says is the most advanced version of such product available worldwide. An in-cabin radar module is used to detect a passenger's presence or movement using radio waves. The product has been used mainly for sensing a child’s presence and preventing vehicle theft. LG Innotek said its in-cabin radar module is best-in-class because it boasts a 40% higher resolution than other products, allowing for a more accurate discernment of objects in the vehicle. The LG module is also 30% faster than other products, the company said. An in-vehicle radar module consists of radar chips, antennas, and communication chips on a substrate. “The new product can sense all passengers’ locations and their movements inside the vehicle,” an LG employee told The Korea Economic Daily. “It can do much better than the existing products in the market that merely sense whether there is someone in the backseat.” The radar module can also be linked to work in conjunction with airbags. It can sense the exact location and size of the passenger to direct the appropriate amount of air pressure in case of an accident. While the existing products have limits as to where they can be placed, usually mounted on the ceiling by the second row of seats or on the side of the rear-view mirror, the new radar module can be equipped with more flexibility, the company explained. By Sin-Young Parknyusos@hankyung.comJee Abbey Lee edited this article.
