No sound but the wind: winter in Ohio by photographer Vanessa Winship

Snow, the new monograph by Vanessa Winship, is a body of work made in rural Ohio. Winship found something special in the area that drew her back on repeated trips to a particular landscape and, notably, a particular season. We present an extract from the book in which her pictures are accompanied by a story by Jem Poster of a fictional encounter between a photographer and her subject.

An exhibition of Winship’s work opens at Huxley Parlour in London on 16 March

As I drive out of town the wind is rising, whipping the powdery snow from the roadside shrubs and sending it whirling across the blacktop. I know what I’m looking for but I see the sign a moment too late. The surface is treacherous. I let the car slow to walking pace before I brake.
