Opinion: DPS is attacking the innovations that make schools excel

At Beacon and other innovation schools in Denver Public Schools (DPS) teachers have worked for years to create plans to ensure we’re able to meet the unique needs of our students - and our efforts have paid off with our kids’ academic success.  As educators, we relish the opportunity to be creative and now more than ever uphold freedom and flexibility in practicing our craft to ensure our students receive the high quality education they deserve. In fact, we all know that developing skills in differentiating instruction is essential to becoming a great teacher.  So as members of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA), we find it absurd that the union and some members of the school board want to deny innovation schools the freedoms in the name of ‘teachers rights.’  This proposed change came as a complete surprise to us and we’re fearful of a board that wants to apply the same set of rules to all schools, regardless of how things are going at the school or what its teachers think. It is not differentiation to mandate blanket rules for all schools without considering the diversity of successful programs.
