The Australian’s Greg Sheridan says he is “flabbergasted” at the Morrison government’s lack of action in the defence space. The Prime Minister gave a speech on Monday to the Lowy Institute, where he announced a new submarine base will be built on the east coast of Australia to support the new nuclear-powered submarines. “Talk is cheap, actions count,” Mr Sheridan said. “What did the Prime Minister announce? He announced that a Defence Committee will look at a location for a base to take shape over the next 20 years. “For subs which don’t exist, we haven’t ordered, and god knows when we’ll ever get … There is no way on God’s green earth we will get these subs in under 25 years.” Mr Sheridan argued the Morrison government is doing “absolutely nothing” to increase Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities. “I am just flabbergasted that in this big national security speech, and in the hundreds of billions of dollars that Josh Frydenberg has flushed down the toilet with COVID, we’ve got not one new missile, not one new warship – nothing.”
