Independent candidate for Kooyong Monique Ryan has said she left the Labor Party after the party failed to take enough action on climate change. Dr Ryan is up against Treasurer Josh Frydenberg for the blue-ribbon seat of Kooyong in Melbourne’s inner suburbs, which has been held by the Liberal Party since its inception. “I initially supported the Labor Party because I thought Kevin Rudd was going to take action on climate change,” Dr Ryan said. “And I left the Labor Party in 2010, with great frustration with both the Labor Party and the Greens about the ineffective approach to what I think is the greatest threat to our economy and to our environment." Dr Ryan defended social media posts she had made since leaving the Labor Party, which supported Julia Gillard and Tanya Plibersek, while she also said Mr Frydenberg had “mined her social media fairly effectively”. “He has cherry picked things that support his own narrative. “I’ve also had lots of respect for members of the Liberal Party, and people of other political stripes as well.”
