Russian troops who entered the northern Ukrainian city of Slavutych on March 26 responded to a protest against the war with gas and gunfire, Ukraine’s public broadcaster reported. The mayor of Slavutych, a city established to house workers who evacuated from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster, called on residents to protest the Russian invasion on March 26. Demonstrators unveiled a large Ukrainian flag and chanted and marched around the town square. Gunshots and the firing of gas canisters can be heard in the video filmed by broadcaster Suspilne News, which reported an unknown number of injuries. Tetyana Melnyk, an advisor to the city mayor, also said that shots were fired and said Russian troops had used light and smoke grenades against the demonstrators, the broadcaster reported. She further said that the Russians had “retreated” from the city center. Ukrainian officials said on March 25 that the city in Kyiv Oblast was surrounded by Russian forces.
