Network Ten’s Political Editor Peter Van Onselen this week engaged in a “grubby” political stunt disguised as legitimate journalism, according to The Media Show host Jack Houghton. It comes as Prime Minister Scott Morrison was forced to defend his relationship with former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian after text messages revealed she allegedly called him a "horrible, horrible person" during an exchange with an unnamed Liberal Cabinet Minister. Mr Van Onselen was the journalist who put the allegations to the Prime Minister. “Van Onselen … has refused to release the text messages or name the alleged sitting minister despite there being immense public interest to know who that person is,” Mr Houghton said. “Instead, PVO claims he did a secret deal with this person and promised to protect their identity in return for a few messages hurling schoolyard insults. “This is where journalists can become political pawns. This is where journalism becomes activism, and a petty stunt dominates the headlines.” Mr Houghton said the move came as Van Onselen was having “his own crisis of collegial criticisms”.
