Charlotte County sheriff’s deputies raced to rescue a man trapped in a burning vehicle in Port Charlotte, Florida, in the early hours of Saturday, April 2, after neighbors heard a loud crash and called 911. According to the sheriff’s office, the 911 callers described the flames as being five feet high and said they heard a man screaming for help. This video released by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office shows deputies Garrett Parrish and Bryant Ovalles Vasquez arriving at the scene. The footage shows them using a fire extinguisher to gain access to the man, before they pull him from the vehicle with the help of a passerby. Parrish and Vasquez found the man with his seatbelt caught around his neck and upper body, the sheriff’s office said. “You truly never know what the night will hold,” said Sheriff Bill Prummell. “The job of a deputy is to act bravely in the face of danger, regardless of what lies ahead. These young men did just that. I couldn’t be prouder.” Emergency service personnel arrived on the scene to provide medical care and transported the victim to a nearby trauma unit. The sheriff’s office said the victim was still in critical condition on April 5 but was expected to survive. Credit: Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office via Storyful
