A pair of “chunky” orphaned bear cubs, who were taken into care after losing their mother to a suspected poacher, were released back into the wilds of Pikes Peak, Colorado, on January 28. Footage shows the bears, described as “healthy, and, as you can see, very chunky”, in their cage at Wet Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation in Wetmore, Colorado. The footage then shows the tranquilized bears being fitted with trackers, and released into an artificial den in the Pikes Peak area. The release was the result of a cooperation between Colorado Parks and Wildlife, who cared for the bears, and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, who built the artificial den and provided tracking equipment. Rebecca Zwicker, animal care manager at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, said: “We’re hoping that through this new GPS tracking, we’ll be able to put more pieces of the puzzle together to keep bears safe and help them be successful in their wild reintroduction.” According to a Colorado Parks and Wildlife press release, the investigation into how the cubs lost their mother is ongoing.
