A maternity and children’s hospital in Mariupol, Ukraine, was struck by Russian bombs on Wednesday, March 9, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky and local officials. The head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kirilenko, said a complex containing a maternity hospital, children’s ward, and other medical facilities was destroyed during a Russian air raid. Zelensky posted footage showing responders assessing damage and searching through the buildings, and said the hospital took a “direct” hit. “People are under the ruins. Kids are under the ruins. This is atrocity!” Zelensky wrote on Facebook. “How much more will the world be complicit, ignoring terror? Close the sky immediately! Stop the killing immediately! You have the power. But you seem to be losing your humanity,” he added. Officials said they did not yet know the number of casualties. It wasn’t immediately clear how many children, if any, were inside the hospital when it was bombed. The destruction at the hospital was “enormous,” the Mariupol City Council said.
