Anthony Albanese’s recent attempt to spin his inability to recall basic economic facts as a mistake is “just nonsense,” says Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton. The first day of the federal election campaign was dominated by Mr Albanese’s refusal to provide the cash rate when asked, and then his failed attempt to recall the national unemployment rate. “The national unemployment rate at the moment is … I think it’s 5.4 … sorry. I’m not sure what it is,” Mr Albanese said while touring the marginal Tasmanian seat of Bass on Monday. The Opposition Leader subsequently branded his jab at the national unemployment rate a “mistake”. “That's not a mistake,” Mr Houghton said. “A mistake is when you say something you think is correct and it turns out to be wrong. “So, he's not really accepting responsibility here - he could have said his mind just went blank or he momentarily forgot, and fair enough, that happens to all of us. “But an attempt to spin it as a mistake is just nonsense.”
