President Tsai vows to work with global community in advancing freedom, democracy at MOFA Spring Banquet
President Tsai Ing-wen said March 10 that Taiwan is committed to working with allies and like-minded partners on safeguarding freedom and democracy while building a more secure and prosperous world. The country has shared its disease prevention experience and supplies with the international community throughout the pandemic, Tsai said, adding that donations of COVID-19 vaccine doses from the Czech Republic, Japan, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and the U.S. are sincerely appreciated by the government and people. To further bolster interactions with friends and contribute more to the global economic recovery, Taiwan recently opened its borders to business travelers, Tsai said. The government is looking forward to working with forces for good in tackling issues such as climate change and global inflation while building digital supply chains, she added. Tsai made the remarks during the 2022 Spring Banquet staged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taipei City. Hosted by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, the event involved around 160 officials, legislators, foreign ambassadors and representatives stationed in Taiwan. According to Tsai, the government will continue promoting the New Southbound Policy and seeking to join regional mechanisms like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. No effort will be spared in strengthening collaboration with Central America allies and EU member states, she added. Tsai took the opportunity to express gratitude to allies and like-minded partners for their rock-solid backing of Taiwan’s international participation, citing the country’s commitment to freedom and democracy and support for Ukraine. Following her remarks, Wu said that as a democracy and responsible member of the international community, Taiwan has launched a donation drive for supplies and funds to assist people dislocated by the current conflict in Ukraine. The government will continue working with forces for good to counter authoritarian expansion while promoting peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, he added.
