Taiwan is committed to defending its free and democratic way of life while cooperating closely with the U.S. in advancing peace and stability throughout the Indo-Pacific and around the world, according to President Tsai Ing-wen March 2.   Amid China’s escalating military threat across the Taiwan Strait, Tsai said, the country is expanding exchanges with like-minded partners such as the U.S. to better respond to unilateral actions impacting regional security.   Tsai made the remarks while receiving a high-level bipartisan delegation comprising former U.S. security officials led by retired Adm. Michael Glenn Mullen, ex-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.   According to Tsai, the group’s visit to Taiwan demonstrates the importance the U.S. attaches to rock-solid bilateral relations. It further highlights the country’s role in regional and global security, as well as the importance of a united democratic community, she said.   Tsai also took the opportunity to thank the Biden administration for taking concrete actions in support of the country in line with the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances. This commitment is illustrated by multiple arms sales and the inclusion of the country in the recently released U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy, she added.   In response, Mullen said maintaining cross-strait peace and stability is in the global interest. The U.S. will continue opposing any unilateral changes to the status quo and supporting peaceful resolutions in keeping with the wishes of the people of Taiwan, he added.   Following the audience with Tsai, the delegation attended a function hosted by Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu. Public remarks backing Taiwan made by the U.S. officials are appreciated by the government and people, Wu said, adding that as a reliable and trustworthy partner, Taiwan is willing and able to contribute more to regional and global peace and prosperity.   In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said “Minister Wu hosted a function for the high-level bipartisan delegation of former #US security officials led by Adm. Mike Mullen at historic Taipei Guest House. The rock-solid support of long-standing friends at times such as these sends a powerful message: #Taiwan is not alone.” (YCH-E)   Write to Taiwan Today at ttonline@mofa.gov.tw
