Drummer Sean Rickman lays out the rhythmic territory that the soloists will explore. The fretless low-end of Şahin’s double-necked baritone guitar overlaps and intertwines with Reggie Washington’s thicker bass sound, while the reverberant high end engages in wild rhythmic and timbral play. Washington and Rickman are good friends and funk veterans; it doesn’t take them long to lock into a filthy groove, upon which Şahin and pianist Cory Smythe playfully complete one another’s sentences. Here the jazz of bebop’s future mixes with the aura of Igor Stravinsky, Edgar Varese and other figures within 20th-century European art music’s avant garde. This is not a random pairing: Parker had plans to study with Varese, but died before that could happen. His oft-voiced desire to take lessons from the composer caused Şahin to listen to him anew, and he heard a new world of possibility within Bird’s solos when he did. Rather than mimic or reference Bird’s distinctive moves, the musicians here strive to create a musical offering that the man himself would have valued.
