Washington’s rolling aquatic mantra of a bass line pulls the proceedings along, while Smythe’s technologically retuned piano prises open the harmonic foundation of the music, allowing strange energy to flow up through the cracks. (Parker did this too, by consistently playing sharp...) The playful, swashbuckling vibe persists to what feels like the end, after which Şahin delivers a surprisingly moving soft coda on solo guitar.
