Hunted for life: What an ICC arrest warrant would do to Vladimir Putin

Former war crimes prosecutor Regina Weiss says if Russian President Vladimir Putin or his cronies are slapped with arrest warrants from the International Criminal Court they will be hunted for life. “The problems of course of bringing anybody to justice are those that include being able to arrest the suspects, so someone like Putin and the people around him – those people who ordered these mass killings – to actually facilitate that arrest can be quite difficult,” she told Sky News Australia. “However, if an arrest warrant is issued under the International Criminal Court, they don’t have an expiry date. “So they will be eventually brought to justice if they’re toppled or if there’s a coup or they leave the country.” Ms Weiss’ remarks come after Ukrainian officials said more than 400 people have been found dead in towns near Kyiv so far after the withdrawal of Russian troops from the area. During a visit to the site of alleged atrocities in Bucha, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters his people had been treated “worse than animals”. Ms Weiss said the sexual assault, summary executions, attacks against civilians and shocking images of bodies littering the outskirts of Kyiv amounted to war crimes. “These are all war crimes, and people need to be held accountable,” she said.
