A recent statement released by French authorities has pledged France and Australia to “rebuild” a bilateral relationship – after accusing the previous Morrison government of a “breach of trust”. It comes as France accused its allies “of stabbing it in the back” – when Australia opted for nuclear-powered submarines to be built with US and British technology. Following Australia’s federal election outcome, French President Emmanuel Macron called Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to congratulate him on his election win. The full statement released by French authorities says: “After acknowledging the severe breach of trust following the decision of the previous prime minister, Scott Morrison to terminate the submarine contracts, the French president and Australia's prime minister have agreed to rebuild a bilateral relation based on trust and respect to jointly overcome global challenges, foremost among which is the climate emergency and the strategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific.”
