A Russian invasion could happen ‘sooner than we had anticipated’

Former US State Department adviser James Carden says a Russian invasion of Ukraine could happen "sooner than we had anticipated". It comes as the United States has submitted a written response to Moscow regarding Russia's security demands to de-escalate tensions on Ukraine's border. “There’s no support among the governments, the NATO governments, to comply with such a request from the Russians,” Mr Carden told Sky News Australia. “Some of us thought that was kind of a starting point to a negotiation that I kind of thought that the real point of the initial Russian letter was to make some headway. “Putin’s response, that’s anyone’s guess, I would say that it wouldn’t shock me if the Russians do decide to launch an invasion now because it’s cold over there and you can launch an invasion right now. “The problem is when Spring comes, it’s going to be hard to move those armoured battalions through Ukraine so it might be happening sooner than we had anticipated.”
