Mumbai helicopter mishap: Four persons, including 3 ONGC employees die

A helicopter carrying nine persons, including two pilots ditched into the sea while attempting an emergency landing on an oil platform in the Arabian Sea on Tuesday morning. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) officials immediately launched a rescue operation and managed to rescue all the persons on board in a two hours operation. Four persons later lost their lives in the incident.According to the ICG, at about 11: 46 am, Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre-MRCC (Mumbai) received an ELT Distress Alert from Australian and Indian MCC. MRCC Mumbai promptly traced the alert to be from Pawan Hans Helicopter (Sikorsky S-76D) employed for ONGC duties in Mumbai High.

"It was learnt that ONGC helicopter was carrying 02 pilots and 07 crew and ditched into the sea whilst attempting an emergency landing on an oil platform. MRCC immediately traced the details and alerted all stakeholders for urgent Search and Rescue. The International Safety Net was activated to alert nearby vessels," the ICG official claimed.Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV) Malviya-16, OSV Greatship Asmi, OSV ABS Anokhi and OSV Subhaprada were then diverted. Within a few minutes, another ONGC aircraft was launched from Juhu airbase. ICG also diverted ICG ships and Dornier Aircraft, officials said.MRCC coordinated Search and Rescue Operations with ONGC Control Room and Nhava Base. An urgent requisition was also made to the Indian Navy and accordingly Naval Seaking Helicopter and Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) were launched promptly."In challenging weather conditions, OSV Malviya-16 located and rescued 04 survivors braving inclement weather conditions whereas 1 survivor was recovered by a lifeboat launched by ONGC rig Sagar Kiran. Similarly, in a commendable rescue operation, Naval Seeking and ALH recovered 04 survivors in critical condition and they were ferried to Juhu airbase for further medical management," the ICG said in a statement."A helicopter carrying nine (9) persons on board, including two pilots made an emergency landing around 11.45 am on the Arabian Sea, one nautical mile away from ONGC offshore rig Sagar Kiran. The Regional Contingency Plan was immediately activated; the Indian Navy and Coast Guard were informed of the incident. ONGC vessels near the location were mobilized for search and rescue operations. With prompt action, one person was rescued by a lifeboat launched from ONGC Rig Sagar Kiran and four persons were rescued by ONGC stand-by vessel Malviya-16. Despite inclement weather conditions, the rescue operations were carried out very swiftly. The Navy also deputed its vessels and chopper while the Coast Guard diverted its vessels and an aircraft. Four persons rescued by a Navy chopper were brought to the base unconsciously and taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, they could not survive. ONGC deeply mourns this tragic loss of life; ONGC is reaching out to the affected families and extending all possible support. An enquiry has been instituted," ONGC claimed in a statement.“Out of the four persons who have died in the unfortunate incident, three were ONGC employees and one was a contractual employee. The reason why they were flying in the chopper today was that they were part of the crew change which is a routine affair in ONGC,” said ONGC official, Sonali Dutta.
