Virgin Atlantic debuts nonstop flights from London to Austin

There's some news out of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and for the first time in months, it's not about endless security lines or fuel shortages or fights over jet-fuel container locations.

Back in January, Virgin Atlantic announced its addition of direct flights from Austin to London, the airline's first new U.S. route since 2017. On Wednesday night, Virgin's founder, British billionaire Richard Branson, landed in Austin, announcing that daily nonstop flights will begin from Austin to London next spring.

But airport news couldn't be all rosy, could it? Passengers on the inaugural flight from London to Austin reported waiting an hour for their bags at AUS. One man claiming to be on the flight implored Branson help out with the bag issue on Twitter.

Branson himself addressed the crowd once everyone had arrived with their bags.

"Thank you for coming, sorry it took you a while to get here. I think every airport in the world seems to be having their fair share of teething problems," he said.

An AUS spokesperson told Fox 7 that there may have been a mixup in bags between two international flights that landed almost at the same time. 

AUS's chief of business and finance Mookie Patel mentioned a 30 percent increase in passengers so far this year, saying that 22 million people will come through their airport by the end of 2022.

Before the press conference ended, though, Patel remained optimistic about adding the international route to the already-busy airport.
